Happy New Cricket Year 2009

Happy New Year from the team at Elite Cricket.

Congratulations to Graeme Smith’s South African team. Again they have played brilliantly, this time in Melbourne, to claim the Boxing Day Test match and the series. This historic series win, South Africa’s first ever in Australia – and the first time Australia have been beaten in a home series since our 2-1 loss to the West Indies 1992-3 – signifies a clear changing of cricket’s world order.

After setting such a high standard for so long Australia have inevitably been defeated by better teams – India and South Africa. Although I’m sure they won’t be looking for any sympathy, I do spare a thought for Australia’s players who are now being judged by the stellar standards for excellence they have set in dominating the game for the best part of twenty years.

Australia have been outplayed by both the South African and Indian teams who have been able, among other things, to beat Australia at their own game in terms of executing the basic skills under pressure and over time.

Australia’s bowling with the exception of Krejza in India and Johnson in Perth has lacked potency and belief. Contrast this to both the Indian and South African attacks that were able to create pressure on Australia’s batsmen through sustained periods of consistent line and length bowling, extracting moving (conventional and reverse swing and spin) from largely unresponsive pitches and developing simple yet effective strategies to Australia’s batsmen such as bowling around the wicket to left handers. High quality bowling has been backed up by great fielding and the South African slip cordon has caught brilliantly to take some superb catches which has no doubt buoyed both confidence within the bowling unit and the team as a whole.

Throughout it’s batting order, South Africa have managed to out play Australia with players including Smith, McKenzie, Alma, De Villiers, Kallis, Duminy, Harris and Steyn placing a high value on their wickets. The South African’s have been tougher than their Australian counterparts with the bat and have demonstrated the key abilities to absorb pressure and defend when necessary and to counter attack when opportunities have arisen. Australia’s batsmen have in general lacked discipline and a number of players have atypically thrown their wickets away when they have been set – a disturbing trend also noted against New Zealand.

Ultimately it is healthy for world cricket, although unpleasant for the Australian players and supporters to be defeated and it is no shame given the quality of the Indian and South African teams. In it’s period of dominance Australia has contributed significantly to the development of the game and has been wonderful to watch in terms of dominant and positive batting, superb pace bowling, the rebirth of spin, brilliant fielding and setting new standards for excellence and achievement. However all things must change and it is now Australia’s turn to rebuild and be the hunter not the hunted!

While we rebuild it is important to remember that we have recently lost a host of champion players such as Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist and Langer and players of this quality do not come along everyday. We need to accept that some young players such as Siddle, Krezja, Hauritz, Bollinger, McDonald and Hilfenhaus with a relative lack of first class experience will be learning from their mistakes at Test level and as such will need support and confidence shown in them by the selectors if they are to succeed.

However at the same time it is also necessary for Australia to get back to basics and embrace an attacking and positive style of play in contrast to the at times negative tactics of recent years. As my old captain David Boon used to say, you need to be prepared to lose a game of cricket in order to win it and while attacking cricket carries this risk, Australia are better served being defeated trying to win than aiming to merely defend and survive, which incidentally is the very strategy that has taken us to the top of the tree in the first place.

Bring on the Sydney Test!

Merry Christmas

Wishing you and your family a healthy, happy and safe Christmas and New Year from the team at Elite Cricket.

It’s great to see cricket in the news for the right reasons. The 1st Australia vs. South Africa Test was a riveting, high standard and see-sawing contest between cricket’s two top ranked teams. South Africa grabbed the initiative and a 1-0 lead in the series and have managed to further dent Australia’s aura of invincibility post the Warne and McGrath era and will be riding high on confidence.

Australia on the other hand will be searching for answers particularly after failing to defend a fourth innings total of 400 plus, however you never write off a champion team and you can bet your bottom dollar Australia will come back hard come Boxing Day!

There is an important lesson in how the South African skipper Greame Smith has modified his approach to leadership on this tour to his last. On the previous tour Smith was highly outspoken and openly provocative towards Australia in the media in comparison to the calm, quiet confidence he has demonstrated this time around as leader.

In doing so he has proven the old adage that actions speak louder than words, in scoring a brilliant second innings century at the WACA and leading his team to an historic win. Focusing on his own game has enabled Smith to direct his talent to influence things where they really count – out on the field and not in the media.

Of course it is great and necessary to be aggressive if you want to play successful cricket however aggression needs to be controlled and channeled positively into great performances, which is exactly what Smith has done.

My former teammates David Boon and Jamie Cox and the other Australian selectors face an interesting challenge when they sit down to pick the team for the Boxing Day test. Among other things they will need to look at how to balance the short-term issue of how to take 20 wickets in a test match with the longer-term consideration of player development. Do they change Krejza and Siddle for Bollinger and Hilfenhaus? or not? Do they stick with a spinner, even if he is not quite ready to deliver consistently at Test level? What do they do with Hayden? Symonds?

It’s a tough and common issue for selectors – short-term pain vs long-term gain! My view would be to have faith and stick with the current squad for now in the hope they will learn and develop into a match winning unit, after all some of our best ever players took a while to get going such as Steve Waugh who debuted in 1985-86 against India and didn’t make a century till 1989 Ashes and Shane Warne who took 1 for 150 odd in his first Test!

All in all it should be a great Boxing Day Test! Enjoy!

India Versus Australia And December School Holiday Cricket Program

INDIA VERSUS AUSTRALIA

The recent India versus Australia Test series was a fascinating and highly competitive contest involving two excellent teams. Not only was the cricket great to watch, it was also an opportunity to learn from watching world class players in action. Below I have highlighted a few of the points that I feel are worth mentioning from a coaching perspective.

  • Be In It To Win It – While there is more to batting than simply staying in the ability to occupy the crease is an essential skill for any batsman who wants to make big scores consistently (and who doesn’t!). The outstanding players in the series Gambhir, Laxman, Tendulkar, Katich and Hussey were all able to occupy the crease and allow the runs to accumulate around them while waiting patiently for opportunities to attack frustrated and tired bowling. Impatience and poor shot selection are great ways to throw your wicket away! The ability to occupy the crease is built around a solid defence and good concentration and are the keys to batting success.
  • The Best Form Of Defence Is Attack – It’s always better to be on the attack than in defence. When batting this means making runs and when bowling it means taking wickets. The majority of wickets fall in 3 ways – bowled, lbw and caught behind the wicket and simply these forms of dismissal can only occur consistently when bowlers are prepared to challenge the stumps! By challenging the stumps (specifically the top of off stump or thereabouts) bowlers not only maximise their chances of taking wickets but also restrict the opportunity for the batsman to score by denying them width to free their arms. The successful bowlers in the India-Australia series took their wickets by challenging the stumps – Sharma, Khan, Harbajahan, Krezja (former Elite Cricket guest coach) and Mishra.
  • Identify and Adapt – Excellent cricketers can thrive under a range of conditions including those that don’t necessarily suit their game – they are able to quickly assess the prevailing conditions and adapt their games accordingly. The Indian pace bowlers Sharma and Khan were successful as they worked out the line and length that they needed to bowl under the conditions and were resourceful enough to find a way to reverse swing the ball – skills that the Australian bowlers struggled to execute consistently enough to win. Significantly the Indian tactics were very simple and largely involved bowling to hit the stumps with the seam up!

Cricket Season Is Here!

Cricket has been well and truly out of the news and many will be surprised by how quickly the season has come around. But it’s here! For many of you club games will start mid-September and trials for Grade, Shires, Representative, Green Shield and School cricket are under way.

To ensure that you blow away the winter cobwebs I recommend you put in some quality practice over the school holidays. This can be done with mates, with your team or at one of our School Holiday Programs (details below).

You may also find it useful to review some of the Masterclass articles on the Elite Cricket website and here are my top 4 recommended articles for starting the season although there are many others you may also like to read:

I also recommend that you do a cricket stocktake of yourself.

  • Are you ready for competition?
  • How’s your fitness? What areas need attention?
  • What are your goals for the season? (Write them down somewhere)
  • What actions do you need to take to reach your goals? (technical, tactical and game play)
  • Have you got a plan to succeed?
  • How’s your equipment – get it out, try it on, partcularly protective gear – does it still fit properly?

Your Best Cricket Season Ever Starts Now

Consistently good performances are built on the back of excellent planning and skillful and precise execution.

Given we are only around 10 weeks from competition it is timely that players wanting to excel this season begin their pre-season campaign.

The key to an effective pre-season is to train both hard and smart, so before you go out and start hitting, bowling and catching balls a little planning will go a long way to ensure your hard work is rewarded.

A thorough plan should cover all aspects of your performance requirements including:

  • Game sense – strategy and tactics
  • Mental – concentration, goal setting, relaxation and dealing with pressure
  • Technical – batting, bowling and fielding/wicketkeeping
  • Fitness – strength, endurance, flexibility and diet

Please find a link below to a 5 step planning model to assist with your planning for the season.
